Meeting or Demanding?
President Obama will be meeting with 12 CEOs according to this article. The CEOs represent different sectors of business but the meeting is supposed to raise support for reducing the deficit. The plan is to cut government spending and raise taxes so he is talking about the tax raise with the attendees. Personally, I feel that a meeting implies sharing ideas about this but I think he is more telling them about the changes coming to more or less prepare them. Sure, they are asking for a couple things in exchange but this must have been expected if you are going to meet with them in person, that just opens the door for talks like that. Do you think a meeting was actually necessary or could Obama just have increased the taxes and expect the companies to follow the new rates? What do you think he is trying to achieve with this meeting?

I agree that Obama is calling this meeting so basically warn big business that their free ride, so to speak, is over. I personally would like to see hidden camera footage from this meeting. Maybe hidden camera footage would provide American's with some idea of the lobbying power of big business or at least provide insight into how government and big business are directly related in out free market system.
ReplyDeleteI'm sure part of the reason that he called the meeting was to play on the formality of the situation. In theory yes he probably could have just implemented the new policy and expected the companies to jump on board, but by meeting with them face-to-face and discussing the changes moving forward, it is a respectful gesture. As long as he is stern about his position on these new policies and cannot be swayed in the direction of the businesses, then I don't think there is any harm in having the meeting.
ReplyDeleteI agree with the previous comments. Its seems like the decision has been made, however it might also serve as an idea for Obama as to where these business stand and who knows, maybe get new ideas by their responses. It is definitely a good gesture from the president; he is confronting things right away and not hiding behind cameras.
ReplyDeleteThe interesting thing on the list of companies is that most, if not all, of them are government beneficiaries and no representation for small businesses in the meeting. The meeting is nothing more than a formality. I agree with all other comments Obama is going to stick with his decision no matter what happens.
