"The nation's unemployment rate, obtained by a separate survey of households, ticked down to 7.2% last month from 7.3% in August, due to more people finding work rather than dropping out of the labor force."
So our economy was able to add more jobs but not nearly as much as they were hoping for. Another part of the article I found interesting was this..
"If there is positive news, it is that the economy continues to grind forward," said Jim Baird, chief investment officer at Plante Moran Financial Advisors. But, he warned, "lackluster employment conditions continue to keep consumer wage growth, confidence, and ultimately spending in check."
Why do you think companies are not able to provide more jobs when thats exactly what we need for the economy to get better? Is there another issue at hand as to why we are not able to add enough jobs?
Lack of full-time positions is the real problem - if there was a report that we had 0% unemployment with everyone working 5 hours a week, I wouldn't feel any better than I do now.
ReplyDeleteI think part of the lower than expected employment numbers is that it has everything to do with the volatility of the government at this point in time. There is a lot of unknowns and uncertainty in the market and that is making some firms shy away from hiring.
ReplyDeleteI agree that low morale and employer confidence would play a role.
DeleteI agree with Colin. There is a lot of uncertainty in the market
DeleteIt will be interesting to compare October projections with actual month employment numbers--that may be the first standard metric to observe the shutdown's effects
ReplyDeleteNew jobs are dependent on increased demand, new demand requires more spending, where will the money come form? Most of the new jobs are low quality jobs paying less then $10 / hr. without any benefits; our middle class is evaporating. The rich are getting richer, the poor are getting poorer and the Tea Party wants to throw them under the bus.
