Why run a political ad like this? Oakland County compared to Detroit.

See here for the video.

  1. I think that was a good example of some people from Oakland county being very lazy. Yes its easy to point out the bad things about Detroit, the entire country can do that based on the stereotypes that the media is continuing to dish out. Firstly, Oakland county is one of the nicest and richest counties in the entire country, so if the people in charge of this advertising campaign couldn't think of anything good to actually say about the county then they should be fired. I am a resident of Oakland county and I also interned at a big business whose Detroit headquarters are actually located in Birmingham (Oakland county, not Wayne where Detroit is). Plenty of thriving businesses have now moved out of detroit into the surrounding area because it is doing much better economically. This information speaks for itself without bashing Detroit. I personally am tired of people all over the world thinking of Detroit with an even worse reputation than it should have because of media portrayal. People from far away are always shocked that I, a white person who is educated, could have grown up so close to Detroit.

  2. This is a terrible ad. Even if a place is doing better than another, there shouldn't be any of this. They are both part of the same state and should support each other because of that. I don't know much about the counties or cities, being from out of state, but what Oakland is doing with this ad is separating people and that should be the least you want to do right now. People from each city mentioned can take this ad to a different level and create problems between them. I don't know why Oakland this this ad but there was no need to bring Detroit or any other Michigan city/county into it. They could've just done one by just talking about what they are doing and their improvements.

  3. I agree with Beth, Oakland can stand on its own without having to bash Detroit. I grew up in Dearborn, which is part of Wayne County, and have a big history with my parents working in the heart of Detroit, and starting our family there as well. Detroit does have its scars, but my mother has been working at Henry Ford Health for over 20 years, and is able to provide for our family. Detroit is far from being as successful as Oakland, but I do not think this advertisement in bashing Detroit shows it. The successes and opportunities that Oakland has should be able to speak for itself.

  4. Why would a school choose to bash another school? Michigan hates Ohio State and vice versa because there is a rivalry, even if they are in the same conference. People who live outside of Oakland county can not be expected to understand the message, and thats why it was not made for them. Although I don't believe the ad should have been run in the first place, I totally understand what its message is. It's not based on a rivalry we have with Detroit, but they are a big influence in what we do and them putting themselves in bad situations, hurts us. I live in Huntington Woods, part of Oakland county. Being as close as we are to Detroit, their politics become our politics, we are effected greatly by what they do. The kwame kilpatrick situation was an embarrassment that dragged everything around it down. Everything they showed in that ad I have seen and it resinated with me, It's not pretty, but they didn't lie. Ads are about making an impact, right or wrong, this one did.

  5. I'll contend that ads are used to prepose a positive impact somewhere. This ad seemed like it was targeting businesses telling them to come to Oakland, not Detroit. But, in fact, I think the ad totally embarrassed Detroit, a historic Michigan symbol, and while it represents facts, I think the message itself was completely missed because of its "bashing" dialogue. Surely there are more impacting ways to represent Oakland as a vibrant place to live, other than by noting the faults of other cities.

  6. Yeah I am surprised that Oakland County would go with this approach to build themselves up. It almost seems desperate, because anyone in the world could tell you that Detroit is not doing so well these days. I agree with Travis that because of how close they are in proximity, that views of the city can sometimes be carried over the the surrounding suburbs. There are parts of Oakland County, such as Huntington Woods where Travis lives, that are a mere stones throw away from downtown. They make it sound like once you cross over some imaginary line you leave the hardships of Detroit and enter the utopia of Oakland County, which is not the case.

  7. In this ad, the "Oakland County Leadership Team" is trying to cut down Detroit so that they can seem higher in comparison, but the comparison only serves to highlight the connection between the two counties. Everybody in the US knows that Detroit is not doing well, but most also know that it is not necessarily the city's fault. Since the fifties, the changing nature of the economy has helped to redistribute populations throughout the United States, especially by pulling people out of downtown Detroit. If anything what I take away from this video is that places like Oakland County might have helped to steal from Detroit's former vitality. While this ad may have been politically advantageous, it is morally suspect. Because many people include Oakland County in the overall Detroit area the ad really shoots the region in the foot, which is probably why it has been pulled.
