Did you know that evolution is a lie from the pit of hell? People have different values, beliefs, and experiences. Somehow we have to aggregate them in ways that create workable communities and societies. Read the story about the Georgia politician up for reelection. (see here for link)
If the video of his remarks were make public on the church’s website then Broun’s speech was not suppose to be off the record. I believe his spokeswoman is trying to convince audiences it was off the record to protect Broun’s public image. In my opinion, politics are no place for religion. Though Broun has the right to practice whatever religion he pleases, he should remember that as politician his speeches are going to be publicized. In generally, I personally find it unappreciated when politicians overpublicized religious views. Politicians should be represented of citizens and should not use their religion as a potential point of common ground to connect with citizen.
ReplyDeleteHe sits on the House Committee on Science, Space and Technology. WHAT....I understand that this kind of pigheadedness exists in America today,(An opinion I will gladly claim) but I despise the fact this kind of attitude can have any kind of influence on the regulation of science in the United States. A failed state indeed. It makes me hesitant to contribute to an American collective knowledge if its reception will be abused (used by the general populous, but openly mocked in its basis). We discussed the general lack of new ideas on the national stage, the fear of having your hard work dismissed creates a massive disincentive. You want to get the country back on track, stop the fear-mongering.
ReplyDeleteI tried to watch the video, but it was taken down by the user, so I wasn't able to see the speech but, wow. I know that we are all entitled to our beliefs and opinions, but this is such a touchy subject I don't think he is helping him in his reelection. I don't really understand why he brought it up... what does it have to do with politics? He just sounds arrogant and narrow minded to me. He should also have realized, like Bianca said, that his words will get out, and people will hear what he has to say. He could of easily stated that he believes in Creationism, instead of using words like, "the pit of hell". This makes his listeners think that anyone who believes in this is functioning from the pit of hell... good luck with getting votes from them.
ReplyDeleteThough we are all entitled to our own religions, as president Obama explained a few days ago, we are not entitled to our own facts, and to the extent that Broun is on the house committiee on Science, Space and Technology, his judgments impair our collective understanding of science. Moreover, this kind of pandering for politico-religious capital (not to mention the religion's historic opposition to science)has polarized the country into those who accept that science can be accurate and important, and those who don't. Sadly, the former is productive, but rarely assures a candidate votes, whereas the latter does exactly the opposite.
