Can you imagine so many people running for election?
In Belgium, "more than 50,000 candidates are in the running to be mayors and local
councilors in its 589 administrative districts, known as communes." They are doing everything and anything to get name recognition. (read the story here)
This is way too much for well anyone to handle I think. There is just way to much going on and way to many candidates that it would be near impossible to research every person to see who you think would best represent you. This is chaotic and makes our system look magnificent. I would see there system having more holes as they can not hold debates or other public speaches to help get people's attention and get their word out. People dancing and singing is not a good reason to put someone in office and it sounds like anyone who wants to runs and has a real chance no matter their background. The system just seems to overwhelming.
It seems that with over 50,000 candidates there should have been some sort of pre-election system that would limit the number of possibly entries on the final ballot. With this massive number of candidates it will be impossible for any one person to fully understand the plans or beliefs that each person has. Furthermore, with so many people running it turns into a popularity contest. With so many famous people taking votes away from deserving candidates seems unfair and unhealthy for the overall well-being of Belgium.
Yeah this is ridiculous. We so often talk about efficiency in our class and this is so not efficient. I don't know how they can even take this seriously, it's seems like a circus. Also, you'd think with over 50,000 candidates they could find some with similar views/interests and therefore greatly reduce the overwhelming amount of candidates.
