Judge dismisses Tea Party group's lawsuit against IRS over targeting
A federal judge recently dismissed the lawsuit against the IRS that said Tea Party groups were illegally targeted by the IRS. The judge dismissed the case because the party was granted non profit status. However, the Tea Party group believes that this will not stop the IRS from illegal targeting groups in the future. We touched on this in class slightly. What are you opinions? Should the judge have dismissed the case so soon, simply because the party was granted non profit status? What should be done to make sure that the IRS does not target parties unlawfully in the future? http://www.foxnews.com/politics/2014/10/23/judge-dismisses-tea-party-group-lawsuit-against-irs-over-targeting/?intcmp=latestnews

While I do think that the government shouldn't be able to target specific groups with audits simply because of their political affiliation, I do think that the women in the video is over exaggerates the issue. I don't think audit targeting is a hate crime or the beginning of a tyrannical government, those seem a little extreme. I also think that the negative press surrounding the situation will discourage the action from happening again. Political parties are trying to get candidates elected and if the party keeps getting bad press then they will try and change their behavior. The bad press has a large effect on public opinion, which could easily prevent a party from being elected.
ReplyDeleteI think this is a major issue. The IRS should not be allowed to target groups that are running against the current political party in power. That pretty much goes against out basic principles of democracy and a fair election. I don't think the judge should have dismissed this so soon. I think there needs to be some sort of a body that is impartial to what is going on in politics that can keep an eye on the IRS, and over government bodies for that matter from overstepping their boundaries.
ReplyDeleteIn accordance with Scott, I agree that the rhetoric in the video is excessive and extreme as the buzzwords "hate crime," and "tyranny," are far from the truth. Given that, this was an atrocious use of political power, as it appears that party in power blatantly targeted their opposition. The issue gets larger for me as it extends into the campaign funding problem, and perhaps all parties should be audited (on second thought, that might cause too large of a scandal). However, campaign funding needs to be reformed as it currently allows big money to highly influence politics, which directly subverts what American democracy stands for.
