Over the weekend, Apple sold over ten million iphone 6's. Apple was pleased to announce that the iphone not only outperformed the iphone 5 first weekend sales by over 1 million units, but the iphone 6 sales were above Apple's expectations. The excitement over the iphone 6 is its increased screen size, which finally will help apple compete with other big screen phones. Many are skeptical though about how effective apple's new iphone is as a big screen phone compared to other similar phones from competitors. Regardless, Apple is very optimistic about the continued success of the iphone 6. It could be a very scary holiday season for HTC, Samsung, and LG.
Discussion points:
- Do you think the iphone 6 is now the superior big screen phone? Or are people just buying this phone because "its an iphone"?
- Do you think iphone sales will continue to soar? Or will sales slow down now that the first weekend hype is over?

If I am LG, Samsung, HTC or any other major phone company, I am not too worried at this point. We all know that Apple is going to have a huge first weekend sales number. This is never news to us. A number is simply a number. There is a large portion of the public that buys the new version just because it is an iPhone. There are Apple maniacs that want every new feature.
ReplyDeleteWill iPhone sales continue to soar? Not every weekend is going to yield this results. We can expect another big bump in the first 3.5 weeks of December. It is just a common trend we see in their sales every year. Yes, the figures a little bit higher than previous years but that might be the result of increasing population.
Apple has every reason to be pleased with the success of the iPhone 6, but we would be fools to think they will stop there.
I think many Apple fans already expect that iphone 6 will be a big screen phone because Apple would not want to lose their shares against Samsung- their biggest competitor, has been known for superior big screen phone. Even though the Iphone 6 hit its sale records, HTC, Samsung and LG would not need to be worried. HTC, Samsung and LG have their shares in Asia where Apple still needs to compete. From Business Insider, HTC Is Reportedly Working On A Beautiful Smart Watch To Compete With Apple so it seems like Apple needs to watch out for HTC.
ReplyDeleteI think Iphone sales will definitely continue to soar. Iphone Sales always continue to soar, it is just a matter of soar at low speed or high speed.

I have to agree with you guys as well, Apple has the benefit of selling many of their phones just off of the name and quality phones that they have provided in the past. If I were the other phone companies I wouldn't be worried apple always has large sales on the release of any new product.
ReplyDeleteThere are 3 iphone 6's each with a different price point. Think price discrimination here.
ReplyDeleteYou all certainly have a point about a lot of Apple's sales being based on name recognition and popularity instead of actual quality. The iPhone 4 had design flaws that lead to problems with reception. Also, in the past software updates have almost forced people buy the next model because the new software took up a lot of memory space and ran the battery down quickly on the older models. Now the iOS 8 update has caused many phones to stop working all together, and many are claiming that the iPhone 6 plus bends through normal wear and tear in one's pocket. This New York Times' blogger further discusses these flaws here: http://nyti.ms/1sqPxyA.
ReplyDeleteI also agree with you about the presence of price discrimination Professor McKinney. I highly doubt that the iPhone 6 Plus actually cost $100 more to make than the iPhone 6.
