People who live in cities other than in suburbs or rural areas tend to be more liberal and vote democrat than in other places. Researchers looked for American's most conservative city and decided it was Mesa Arizona. (see link below). Doesn't it seem that these cities are all described in terms of organic society with government as the heart center? And yet, the outcomes in Mesa seem mechanistic to me in many ways. Comments ?

I agree with you here, Dr. McKinney. In some ways, the structure of the city as depicted in the text (even the picture and caption) seems contradictory to the city's label as "America's most conservative city."

"Essentially a Phoenix bedroom community (though some larger employers, notably Apple, have recently moved into Mesa itself), Mesa consists of endless miles of strip malls and subdivisions filled with squat ranch houses, all connected by six-lane roads where people regularly zip by at 60 miles an hour. To my point, I'm confused at the contradictory nature of the article. Further supporting my confusion, why is the article stating that the city is "implementing policies that will make it more like Portland, Oregon," when (I thought) Portland was notoriously liberal? I think this city is cool in structure, but I am questioning the validity of how traditionally conservative Mesa is. Perhaps this is the future of a more trendy conservative city.
Reading about Mesa, it seems like more of a 50s-70s style conservatism than the newer libertarian conservatism. The notion of organic community is important to that kind of religious and cultural ideology, even if they reject heavy state involvement in welfare and planning as too radical. I think that conservative approach to community is why they accept limited approaches to infrastructure and environmentalism in a limited manner. I thought this paragraph was revealing,
