In response to the recent Ebola epidemic in West Africa,
President Obama argued that the world is not doing enough to combat the crisis
at a United Nations meeting last week. He went on to say that the current
international response is not enough and that more commitment by individual
nations is necessary. Since last week, President Obama has increased the U.S.
effort by dispatching approximately 3,000 military personnel to West Africa to
assist in treatment aid. Moreover, the World Bank has donated a total of $400
million to the cause to this date. As of right now, there has been 6,263
confirmed cases of Ebola with 2,917 of them being deaths.
Is Obama right in asking for more international commitment
to the Ebola Crisis? What else can be done?
I think Obama is in the right here. From what I have heard on the news, Ebola is a pretty nasty disease and finding a more efficient way to fight and possibly cure the disease is in everyone's best interest. I think the main key right now is to keep the outbreak contained. Once it has been successfully contained, then the world can concentrate its efforts on finding a cure.
ReplyDeleteObama is certainly correct in calling for more international support in controlling and resolving the Ebola crisis. In his speech to the UN Obama calls for intervention as the epidemic is a growing security risk, however stepping in on humanitarian reasons alone should be more than enough. If this epidemic were occurring in a 'developed nation' I think that the international response would have likely been much different. There are thousands of people dying and the disease continues to spread, this reason alone should be a call for immediate intervention regardless of location and/or politics.
ReplyDeleteI also agree that President Obama is doing the right thing. The world has underestimated the deathly impact of Ebola but not enough action has been done. The number of people passed away because of Ebola keeps increasing and that is a shocking number to everyone. The world needs to come together to support West Africa.
