What a Government Shutdown Means for You

If the government were to shut down, what would change in your daily life? That's what CNN asks in this article, showing ten ways that you would be affected just going about your day. Out of the posts I've done so far, I find this one the most interesting - we talked on day one about what the government does, and we don't necessarily take the time to feel the effects of everything it handles on a day-to-day basis.

Take a minute to read the list of ten things and feel free to comment here about which ones you didn't really think about. Also, think about which ones would be most detrimental if a shutdown was sustained over a long period of time.

  1. it is very hard to blame one group of people for the problem and there might be extra money around if it wasn't being used in unnecessary ways.

  2. Maybe this is only a surprise to me because I don't live in Washington, but I was shocked to read that trash won't be collected in D.C. if the government shuts down. Not only will that be utterly disgusting, but it also sounds like a health hazard...

  3. Yeah, that one's a bit strange and not at all convenient for sure. I agree that the effects on the people's psyche and morale would be one of the most significant forces affecting their economic decisions.

  4. Just don't believe that this is being dragged on forever! I love how Obama has time to deal with Syria, Russia etc. but can't take out time to reach a compromise in the congress!

  5. I thought the thing that stood out to me most was the section about ones who serve in the military. They will continue to serve and protect our country with our lives but get an IOU in return? Somethings wrong there...

  6. I think number 5 is basically the best way of seeing how ridiculous this whole cliff is: one of the major reasons the republicans are threatening to let the government go over the cliff--the desire to defund obamacare--won't actually be affected by the government going over the cliff.

  7. So glad you posted this. I was actually thinking about how this would affect me the other day. It all seems really silly. Somewhat looks like Republicans throwing a toddler fit.
