  1. Wow this is really interesting. And I really liked how 70% of 400 members started from scratch, that is pretty encouraging. And also that most have the ripple effect, being able to employ a lot of people! For example Panda Express, employing 21,000 people. I also find it interesting that there is more than one member of the top 10 from Walmart stores. Cool article Beth!

  2. I agree Maureen. This is great news for those who want to see their name in that list some day. The fact that only 4 of the 20 newcomers inherited their fortune shows that its not only about who you or your dad knows; dedication can get you places. I was shocked to see that Facebook's CEO fell a couple of spots in the list, but I am glad that new people are appearing in the list!

  3. As an immigrant, I feel this is exactly why many people are attracted to US. There is opportunity for people with creativity and hard work. But I also believe that you can't be Richie Rich with just honest hard work, however you will get value for your work in America unlike in many other countries.

  4. Definitely a cool article. The same section that Maureen pointed almost instantly change my perspective on the ultra rich. I have seen Forbes 400 lists before, but never have I seen a compilation of stats like that. I wonder if such a thing is now relevant because of the election? It's screams to right wing political ideology, and shows some significant proof for the self sufficiency policy. However I would really like to see this number broken down somewhere, into its constituent parts. Although a convincing statistic it sounds a lot like a Romney 47% compilation stat.
